The Hefner Collection Acquires New Painting by Singapore Artist Chen KeZhan
by Jon Burris, March, 2007
The Hefner Collection is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new painting by Singapore artist Chen KeZhan. Entitled "Autumn Rocks" 2006, the 7'x5' brush painting is an excellent example of the artist's vibrant, abstract style dealing with organic subject matter. The work was selected by MeiLi Hefner while on a visit to the artist's studio in Singapore in late February.
Speaking about the piece, KeZhan said, "Autumn has always been a favorite season of mine. I'm inspired by the colors of nature; by both the warmth and coldness of the time. It was on a trip to Laos along the Mekong river when I had the inspiration for this painting. It is an expression of autumn colors and also of the rocks I saw along the river." KeZhan says that nature is the main source for his work, but music is another form of inspiration. He is also a gardener who draws upon his own landscape creations for material for his art.
KeZhan began painting at the age of three, seriously practiced calligraphy and traditional ink and brush painting throughout his childhood, and by the age of eighteen, considered himself a professional artist. Born in Singapore in 1959, KeZhan's family was from southern China. He studied with Chinese brush painter Fan Chang Tien for four years beginning in 1975, and then with Chao Shao-an and Fung Kang-ho in Hong Kong in 1979. In 1983, he moved to Paris to study music and was involved in several one-man and group exhibitions there before returning to Singapore in 1986. Since that time, KeZhan has traveled extensively and has developed an international reputation. He is equally recognized as part of a generation of Chinese artists who have increasingly developed a new language of abstract brush painting and calligraphy. Chen KeZhan's art is included in private and museum collections worldwide from Malaysia to the United States and is now a part of The Hefner Collection.
