He Jiancheng was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong province in 1957. He graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with an M.A. degree in 1987. 
He remained there for several years as an instructor. He now lives in California and is pursuing a career as a professional painter.

“Original Shape” is from a series of paintings in which the artist has said he focused on the mysterious presence of monolithic stones found within the natural landscape. As if to suggest that, this particular stone either draws from or emits energy back to the surrounding earth. The viewer can sense movement in the tall grass, almost as though it is being pulled toward the stone. The blue-gray atmospheric light adds an ethereal tone to the scene. The message of this painting may be that nature is the timeless, universal force within all things.
